Weight Loss Program Q&A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific body points or “energy pathways.” The inserted needles act to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” hormones. This can create a calming, relaxing effect, which counteracts the need for excessive eating brought about by increased stress, frustration or anxiety. In this respect, acupuncture can calm those so afflicted and help them lose weight while at the same time gaining their health.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the belief is that excessive weight gains are caused mainly by an imbalance in the body due to a malfunction of the spleen and liver organ systems. Skilled acupuncture practitioners will work on specific body areas to effect weight loss. Among these are the endocrine system and kidneys to treat water retention and to stimulate hormonal rebalance. The spleen and thyroid gland are also targeted to effect sugar and insulin rebalancing. Finally, the adrenal and ovary glands are included to treat weight gain due to menopause or Premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Some people notice the effects of acupuncture fairly quickly and only require treatments for short period of times.

Another Chinese acupuncture practice for losing weight in this program is auricular acupuncture in which small round seeds are used to stimulate certain points on ears to control food cravings. Auricular acupuncture or ear acupuncture has also been used successfully to help cigarette smokers and drug addicts to quit their drug habits.

What is Medicated Diet?

As the name suggests, medicated diet involves treating and preventing diseases by making changes in one’s diet. Food therapy in traditional Chinese medicine aims to maintain balanced nutrition through balancing the Yin and Yang by the combination of nutrition and medicine. A medicated diet practitioner will suggest certain foods to eat while other foods to avoid based on each individual’s body condition and in addition, Chinese medicinal herbs are often incorporated into the daily diet to further enhance the effect of the dietary changes.

Who can benefit from?

If you have gained weight, if you have gut problems like IBS and Crohn’s disease, bloating and so on, if you have uterus problem, if you have diabetes or high blood sugar and if you want to shrink your abdomen this program is for you.

How many sessions will I need?

Although different acupuncture practitioners recommend different levels and lengths of treatment, if you plan on losing 10 to 15 pounds, having two treatments a week for six to eight weeks is a common program. In our program, beside acupuncture treatments we will go through your diet and eating habits and modifying it for a holistic and permanent health/balance of body and weight.

You can book from online or call 416-488-8414 (Eglinton) / 416-691-7105 (Beaches). For more information about the 5 package deal, please contact Maryan when she works at the clinics.
